Merry Maids Franchise Owner & Veteran Dan Sheets: Leadership Skills Shine

Merry Maids® franchise owners come from all walks of life, and this Veterans Day, we’d like to recognize Dan Sheets, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Dan served in the U.S. Air Force for 10 years, working as an intelligence officer across numerous conventional and special operations assignments.

“One of my grandpas served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and I grew up hearing his stories,” Dan said. “I felt serving my country would be worth doing, and after I graduated from college at Utah State University, I was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. Honestly, it was the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Along with stateside assignments, Dan was deployed to Korea, Iraq, Jordan, and Kuwait.

“We were in Korea when Kim Jong Il died and Kim Jong Un took over,” he said. “No one knew much about him, and we thought he might want to start a war, so there was a lot of anticipation and anxiety.”

Post-Military Career Aspirations

After the military, Dan pursued a career in the tech industry. After moving around, Dan and his wife decided to settle near her family in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they now live with their three children. In 2024, Dan decided to start a Merry Maids franchise business.

“I wanted to build something, and I wanted to be more local,” he said. “My career was internationally focused in the military and then U.S. focused in tech, and I wanted to shrink my world and focus on my community. It’s been a very gratifying change.”

Dan chose Merry Maids for a variety of reasons. First, unlike some franchises, Merry Maids owners are allowed to have other sources of income, so the opportunity allowed for a transition period. Second, he had searched online for ‘best franchises,’ and Merry Maids was on the list .

“I was also looking at company values, and Merry Maids aligns with my values,” he said. “Plus, there’s a huge veteran discount. So, it all made perfect sense.”

Dan’s military skills have helped him in his Merry Maids business ownership.

“In both the military and at Merry Maids, you need to learn to work with people from all different backgrounds,” he said.

Supporting Other Military Veterans & the Community

In the military, he was an intelligence officer, often working with Green Berets and Navy SEALs, and it was important to support them in the way they needed.

“It’s the same at Merry Maids,” Dan said. “Just like I needed to tailor my intelligence support to give them the right experience, I have the same empathy-driven approach to customers. We need to know what they want, what they value, and what they expect—and cater to match their needs.”

There are other lessons he learned in the military he applies to his business.

“All problems have solutions, and the military taught me to adapt and overcome,” he said. “We find the root of the problem, address it, and grow from there. I’m glad I’m a Merry Maids owner, and I look forward to making the business and our community even better.”

Merry Maids would like to thank Dan and all veterans for their service.
