At Merry Maids, we know it is imperative to provide great cleaning that is also safe. Our line of maintenance products, Shineffective® are DfE® approved - Design for Environment (www.epa.gov/dfe/), which means they meet independent guidelines established by the United States EPA.
What is DfE? Design for the Environment is a U.S. EPA Partnership Program. When you see the DfE logo on a product, it means that the DfE scientific review team has screened each ingredient for potential human health and environmental effects and that-- based on currently available information, EPA predictive models, and expert judgment the product contains only those ingredients that pose the least concerns among chemicals in their class.
Our Shineffective products are lower in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are typically used to keep fragrances in the air longer but can cause issues for those with allergies and asthma. At Merry Maids, a clean house has cleaner air because we care not only about the planet but also about the people and animals that inhabit it.
Merry Maids branded products are shipped to us in concentrate form, which means we can lessen our carbon emissions by not shipping water, which is the primary ingredient in ready-to-use products. We dilute products locally and put them in re-usable bottles. This use and re-use of many bottles and sprayers also mean less plastic in landfills. However, when a home has not been maintained to Merry Maids' high cleaning standards, we may recommend a stronger line of products - at the discretion of our customers - to bring a home up to our standards and then maintained using our Green line of products.
Process and Equipment Make a Difference
Indoor pollution rates are typically higher than outdoor pollution rates, and dust is a big contributor to indoor pollution. Therefore, Merry Maids takes dust removal seriously. For removing dust and dirt while cleaning, we haven't found anything better than microfiber cloths. These cloths capture dust and dirt rather than move it around. Microfiber cloths also last longer than traditional cotton cleaning cloths and take less energy to wash and dry. This can mean that fewer cloths end up in landfills, and Merry Maids' carbon footprint is smaller. We use vacuums that meet Gold Seal standard of the Carpet and Rug Institute's Green Label certification.* This certification ensures that among other things, a vacuum must not release more than 100 micrograms of dust particles per cubic meter of air.*
