Hosting friends and family during the holidays is one of the season’s greatest joys, but it also takes some preparation. How can you prepare your home in time? Start early. It’s all easier when you break down your prep into manageable steps.

By using a two-week timeline, you can get your home organized while saving your energy for enjoying your company.

Two weeks out

Starting early gives you a cushion for unexpected events and keeps last-minute chores from piling up.

Take control of the entryway

Your entryway gives a first impression when guests walk through the door.

  • Clear away shoes, extra coats, and daily clutter.
  • Make sure you have enough empty coat hangers in the closet or set up a coat rack.
  • Place a durable mat outside the door to catch dirt, mud, and snow.

Refresh the guest room

Give your guests a comfortable place where they can really relax.

  • Make sure the bedding is clean and fresh.
  • Clear off nightstands and dresser tops so guests have space for their personal items.
  • Make sure there is an outlet and a charger guests can easily reach.

One week out

One week to go! Get ready to feed your guests.

Clean and organize the kitchen

Preparing your kitchen early makes it much easier to meal prep and host.

  • Clear out space in the refrigerator and freezer to make room for platters, drinks, and leftovers.
  • Wipe down cabinets, polish hardware, and clean the interior of the microwave and oven.
  • Run a cycle through the dishwasher with a cleaner to make sure it’s ready for extra holiday loads.

Stock up on guest supplies

This is definitely an area you can work on ahead of time.

  • Set out hand towels, bath towels, and extra rolls of toilet paper in plain sight.
  • Provide soap, lotion, and a small basket of forgotten toiletries like toothbrushes and floss.

Three days out

Now that the major chores are out of the way, focus on the extras that make guests feel welcome.

  • Set up beverage stations: Create a self-serve coffee or drink station away from the main kitchen area to keep guests hydrated and happy.
  • Spot-clean: Rotate couch cushions, set up decorative pillows, and wash throw blankets so the living room seating feels fresh.

One day out

Because you started early, the home is already clean and organized. The day before your event should be manageable!

  • Wipe down bathroom counters, mirrors, and sinks.
  • Empty all trash cans and recycling bins in the house.
  • Do a final sweep or vacuum of floors.
  • Dim lights, light a seasonal candle, and set out flowers.
